Currently scheduled to be launched atop an Ariane 5 rocket on October 31st 2021 it will position itself near the Earth-Sun L2. The huge sunshield will allow the main part of the infrared telescope to function at very low temperatures. The primary mirror is made of 18 hexagonal beryllium segments, each covered in a very thin layer of gold. It will be able to observe in long-wavelength visible light through mid-infrared light, allowing it to see very old and distant objects that cannot be observed by Hubble. Currently scheduled to launch atop an ULA Atlas V 401 in October 2021, Lucy is destined to study the trojan asteroids that share the same orbit as Jupiter. There is a population of small bodies both trailing and leading Jupiter in order and Lucy will fly by at least 7 of the trojan asteroids during the planned 12 year mission.
